Palm disorder
Nitrogen Deficiency
An evenly pale, light-green canopy with no spots and no dead tips, starting on the oldest fronds. It is uncommon in established landscape palms here outside of majesty and areca palms, and unlike most deficiencies, the color comes back once the palm is fed.
Palms most affected: Majesty palm, Areca palm, Palms in containers

- Affects
- Majesty palm, Areca palm, Palms in containers
- When it shows
- Year-round. Many counties restrict nitrogen in the summer rainy season, commonly June through September.
- What we do first
- Check the fertilizer program, then rule out lethal bronzing on any whole-canopy color change.
What you see
Signs in the field
- Uniform light green on the oldest fronds first, then working up
- No spotting, no banding and no dead tissue at first
- Eventually the whole canopy evenly pale
- Severe cases: near-white leaves, growth stopping and the trunk tapering
- On areca palms, golden-yellow leaf stems are normal for the species

The detail
What else to know
Uncommon here, so ask why
Significant nitrogen deficiency in established landscape palms is mainly seen in majesty and areca palms. A light-green canopy on most other species is a reason to check the fertilizer program first, and then to ask whether something else, such as lethal bronzing, is going on.
The one that greens back up
Nitrogen-deficient leaves can recover their color after correct feeding. Potassium and magnesium symptoms never do.
What we do
How Ptolemy handles it
Field condition first, then the recommendation. Treatment, removal and diagnosis calls are made by an ISA Certified Arborist, and the serious ones are confirmed in a lab.
- Complete palm fertilizer with slow-release nitrogen on the program schedule, inside the county’s fertilizer ordinance.
- Check the county rules before every application. The ordinance sets what is allowed. UF/IFAS sets what is best within it.
- Rule out lethal bronzing when a single palm loses color among healthy neighbors.
