Palm disorder
Iron Deficiency
Yellow new fronds over green old ones. In palms it is almost never a lack of iron in the soil. It is a root problem: planted too deep, poor drainage, wet soil starving the roots of air. Fix the cause and the yellow can turn green again.
Palms most affected: Foxtail palm, Lady palm, Queen palm, Palms in containers

- Affects
- Foxtail palm, Lady palm, Queen palm, Palms in containers
- When it shows
- Year-round. Worse on wet, poorly drained sites.
- What we do first
- Check planting depth and drainage before any iron goes down.
What you see
Signs in the field
- Yellow new fronds while the older fronds stay green
- Yellow between the veins or across the whole leaflet
- On queen palms, yellow new leaves dotted with small green spots, 2 to 4 mm (about 0.1 to 0.15 inch) across
- Chronic cases: the whole canopy yellowing from the top down
- Severe cases: dead new leaflet tips and stunted growth
- Often clustered near pavement, curbs and low, wet spots
A root problem, not a soil shortage
Iron deficiency in palms almost always comes from roots that cannot breathe or work: deep planting, poor drainage, root rot, or other elements crowding out iron uptake. High soil pH causes iron trouble in many broadleaf trees, but usually not in palms.
Planted too deep
The most common cause of chronic iron deficiency in landscape palms is a palm set deeper than it grew. That is why planting depth is checked on every new install we inspect.
It can recover
Unlike most deficiencies, yellow iron-deficient leaves can regain their green once the cause is corrected.
What we do
How Ptolemy handles it
Field condition first, then the recommendation. Treatment, removal and diagnosis calls are made by an ISA Certified Arborist, and the serious ones are confirmed in a lab.
- Look at the root zone first: depth, drainage and compaction.
- Report deep-planted palms for resetting. On a new install, that is the installer’s to fix.
- An iron chelate drench or foliar spray for short-term color, at label rates our certified arborist sets. Chelates can injure palms at high rates and stain hardscape.
- Follow the palm over the next visits to confirm the cause is fixed and not only masked.

FAQ
Questions about iron deficiency
Should we just add iron?
Iron alone treats the symptom. In palms the cause is almost always the roots: depth, drainage or compaction. We fix that first.
Will the yellow fronds green up?
Often, yes. Iron deficiency is one of the few where yellow tissue can recover once the cause is corrected.
Why foxtail palms?
Foxtail and lady palms are especially prone. On our sites we see it most where roots sit wet or deep.
