Palm disorder

Magnesium Deficiency

Broad yellow bands on the oldest fronds, with a green stripe left down the center. It is common on Canary Island date palms, looks alarming and is never fatal. It tells us the nutrition program needs attention.

Look for a green stripe down the center of the yellow fronds.

What you see

Signs in the field

  • Broad lemon-yellow bands along the edges of the oldest fronds
  • A green stripe down the center of each frond, kept even in severe cases
  • Yellow spread evenly from base to tip of the frond, not worst at the tip
  • No dead tissue from magnesium shortage alone
  • On Canary Island date palms, potassium spotting on the outer half of a frond and magnesium banding on the inner half, both at once

The detail

What else to know

01

Manageable, and worth fixing early

Magnesium deficiency does not kill palms. It does show that the soil is not feeding the palm, and it often travels with potassium deficiency, which does kill.

02

The balance problem

Potassium and magnesium compete for uptake. Feeding potassium alone can push a palm into magnesium deficiency. A good palm fertilizer carries both, in slow-release form.

03

Telling it from potassium

Magnesium yellow is bright lemon with a green center. Potassium is orange-bronze spotting with dead tips, worst toward the end of the frond.

What we do

How Ptolemy handles it

Field condition first, then the recommendation. Treatment, removal and diagnosis calls are made by an ISA Certified Arborist, and the serious ones are confirmed in a lab.

  • Complete palm fertilizer with slow-release magnesium on the program schedule.
  • Supplemental magnesium for severe cases, spaced away from regular feedings, at a rate our certified arborist sets.
  • No foliar magnesium sprays. They are generally ineffective.
  • No removal of yellow fronds that are still partly green.

FAQ

Questions about magnesium deficiency

Will my palm die from this?

Not from magnesium deficiency alone. Caught early, it is manageable. We correct it, because it often comes with potassium deficiency, which can kill a palm if it is left.

How long until it looks better?

One to two years or more. The yellow fronds stay yellow. New fronds come in green as the palm is fed.

Why Canary Island date palms?

They are by far the most susceptible species. Many show magnesium and potassium shortage on the same frond.
