PALM NUTRITION &
FERTILIZER
Palm Tree Nutritional Requirements
Palm Trees have very specific nutrient requirements and often get overlooked in a landscape setting. Florida’s sand and calcareous soils are often deficient and leaching. There are 16 elements required by palms for normal growth, and 7 of these are often seen in deficiency. (Nitrogen, Potassium, Magnesium, Iron, Manganese, Boron and occasionally Phosphorus)
Why aren’t my Palms Healthy?
Once palms are installed in an environment that does not cater to it’s nutrient need, it will begin showing signs of nutrient decline in 1-3 years. A combination of factors contribute to this decline. Plantings are often done in sub-soil, which can be compacted with a high pH. Many times Palms are over irrigated & not on an adequate fertilizer plan. Making matters worse, these factors make the palm susceptible to pests, disease & fungal issues.
Will there be immediate results with a Health Program?
This generally depends on the deficiency. With some corrections, results can be seen in 3-6 months. Other deficiencies could take 2-3 years or more. A palm that is nutrient deficient is fairly easy to noticed. Symptoms include yellowing, curling, dying fronds, spots, etc. Palms may also be showing specific signs such as "Pencil Topping"
